Nature

The Pantalica Nature Reserve is valued not only for its archaeology, but also for its nature and landscape.

The landscape

Rock, water and life

Set in a unique geological landscape, it blends remarkably with the prehistoric remains and comes in many parts: the Anapo river and its tributary the Calcinara, the majestic canyon-like rock walls and an extraordinary wealth of plants and wildlife.

The Anapo and Calcinara rivers

In terms of nature, the Anapo and the Calcinara, which you can reach from Sortino along the scenic Bottiglieria trail, are the liveliest part of the area and a rich habitat for every kind of plant and animal life.

The canyon walls

Majestic canyon-like rock walls, with karst cavities studied by cavers.

Plants and wildlife

An extraordinary wealth of species, from the very rare trout to birds of prey and bat colonies.
